Company Overview / Who We Are
Purpose is an AI-powered personal growth mentoring app built to help people make better decisions, gain clarity, and live more aligned lives. Co-founded by Mark Manson, three-time New York Times bestselling author and repeat AI founder Raj Singh, Purpose brings thoughtful mentorship to people at a scale that was never possible before. Since launching in Q4 2025, Purpose has grown quickly, growing to tens of thousands of new users within a month and supporting a global community.
Most AI coaching apps are expensive journaling. You talk, it validates, you feel heard, nothing changes. We are building something different. Purpose uses structured coaching frameworks, psychometric assessments, and a quest-based scaffolding system grounded in behavior change science to help people make real progress on the things that matter to them. We hold ourselves and our product to a high standard. We measure whether someone is getting better, not whether they opened the app today.
This is not another chatbot. This is a team working to get it right.
About the Role
We are hiring a Product Manager, Behavioral Science to own the quality, outcomes, and science behind Purpose's coaching experience. You will own the chat system and quest system that form the core scaffolding of the product. You will design the structured content frameworks, evaluation systems, and measurement approaches that determine whether our AI coach helps people change or keeps them comfortable.
You will report directly to the Chief Science and Technology Officer and operate with significant autonomy. This is a high-trust, high-ownership role for someone who wants to shape the behavioral backbone of a product reaching tens of thousands of people.
If you have spent your career studying what makes people change and you want to see that research reflected in a real product used by real people, this is the role to do it.
Location: Remote
Time Commitment: Full-time
What You Will Own
- Chat and Quest Systems
- Own the product surfaces where coaching happens. The chat system is how users interact with their coach. The quest system is the structured scaffolding that turns conversations into progress toward meaningful goals. You will define the roadmap, prioritize improvements, and ship changes to these systems based on user data, behavioral science principles, and outcome measurement.
- Coaching Frameworks and Content Design
- Design and build the evidence-based frameworks that scaffold Purpose's coaching conversations. Translate behavior change methodologies into structured content that guides AI interactions toward real outcomes rather than open-ended validation loops. You will determine what the coach says, when it says it, and why.
- Measurement and Outcomes
- Develop and refine the assessments that help Purpose understand where users are and whether they are progressing. Ground our measurement approach in validated instruments and psychometric principles so we can make credible claims about outcomes, both to users and in published research. You own the answer to the question: is this product helping people change?
- Quality and Safety
- Review AI coaching transcripts systematically. Identify patterns where the coach succeeds and where it fails. Build and maintain the evaluation rubrics that define what a good coaching conversation looks like across dimensions like proportionality, compassion, readiness matching, and engagement. Coauthor and maintain annotation guidelines for transcript reviewers, lead calibration sessions, and resolve inter-rater disagreements. Collaborate with the CSTO on crisis detection, escalation protocols, and safety architecture, and with Purpose's Scientific Advisory Board on safety standards and emerging best practices.
- Research and Publication
- Support Purpose's research agenda. Design outcome studies, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and help build the evidence base that distinguishes Purpose from every competitor running on vibes and engagement metrics. You will be part of a team that takes scientific rigor seriously and publishes what we learn.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate degree in psychology, behavioral science, coaching science, or a closely related field (PhD, PsyD, or equivalent doctoral degree strongly preferred)
